Dawgs Streak Broken As Gonzaga Wins, 12-0
March 21, 2007
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington baseball team had its nine-game winning streak snapped Wednesday as Gonzaga freshman Jeremy Stumetz tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout in a 12-0 win in a non-conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex.
Stumetz, a right-hander from Richland making his first college start, held the Huskies to just four singles and a walk while striking out six for his first victory. Gonzaga improved to 15-11 with the win while Washington fell to 11-9.
Gonzaga's first three hitters in the first inning all singled to open the game. The third of those three hits, from third baseman Darin Holcomb, drove in Evan Wells to put the Bulldogs in front, 1-0.
Holcomb added to the lead in the third inning, driving a long home run to left field with Wells aboard, making it a 3-0 game.
Gonzaga scored four more in the fifth. After walks to Wells and Holcomb, Ryan Weigand singled to drive in one run. Catcher Dustin Colclough followed with a sacrifice fly and Weigand scored when a grounder from Mark Castellitto was mishandled by UW shortstop Brian Pearl. A single from Aaron McGuinness drove in Castellitto to wrap up the scoring in the inning with the Zags in front, 7-0.
Gonzaga iced the game with a five-run eighth inning.
UW sophomore starter Geoff Nichols (1-1) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits in his four and one-third innings.
The Huskies open Pac-10 Conference play this weekend at Washington State. The series opens Friday with a 5:30 p.m. game. A live audio broadcast of Friday's game will be available on gohuskies.com. Saturday's 2:00 p.m. game and Sunday's noon series finale will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
