Cal Baseball Wins Series with 6-1 Victory Over Oral Roberts

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California baseball team, behind big games from pitchers Alex Rollin and Matt Gorgen, and home runs from Blake Smith and Stephen Carlson, won its second non-conference series in a row, defeating Oral Roberts, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 14-13, including winning last weekend's series versus Rhode Island, and seven of their last 10 games. The Golden Eagles fell to 11-11. Oral Roberts had won a 2-1 squeaker over Cal on Thursday, before the Bears rebounded to win 8-3 Friday and 6-1 Saturday.

Rollin improved his record to 6-1 by throwing 5.0 innings with four hits, one run, four walks and three strikeouts. He was able to limit Oral Roberts to one run after the Eagles had left seven runners on base in the first three innings. Gorgen came in to earn his fifth save of the year, throwing a career-high 4.0 innings with one hit, no runs, no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts. On the year, he has 40 strikeouts in 27.3 innings.

Offensively, Cal got its first run of the game when freshman right fielder Blake Smith hit a lead-off homer in the third inning off of Oral Roberts starter Chris Ashman (1-3, 7.3 innings, six hits, four runs, three earned runs, no walks, eight strikeouts). The Bears later added another run in the third on Carlson's sacrifice bunt/RBI that scored Michael Brady, who had singled following Smith's homer.

The Eagles got within 2-1 with a run in the top of the fifth when Jake Kahaulelio and Chad Rothford had back-to-back singles to lead-off the inning, and Kahaulelio scored when Stephen Pearson hit into a 4-6-3 double play.

But senior third baseman Carlson came up big again for Cal in the sixth inning when he homered off of Ashman with one out. Junior second baseman Josh Satin added another run for the Bears in the sixth on an RBI single to right, scoring freshman center fielder Jeff Kobernus. Cal concluded its scoring with two runs in the eighth on junior designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky's two-run double.

The Bears will next travel to UC Santa Barbara for a single game, Wednesday, Mar. 28 at 2 p.m. Cal then returns to Evans Diamond for their Pac-10 opening series against Washington State, beginning Friday, Mar. 30 at 2 p.m.
