Cardinal Shuts Out Long Beach State 3-0

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford pitcher Missy Penna pitched a complete game two-hitter to help the 10th ranked softball team to 3-0 victory this afternoon over Long Beach State on the second day of competition at the Stanford Invitational II. The Cardinal improve to 22-5 on the year while the 49ers fall to 13-16 overall.
Stanford got on the board in the bottom of the to get things started. Shannon Koplitz was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Michelle Smith then singled to left field, advancing Koplitz to second. A sacrifice bunt by Erin Howe moved both runners up. Rosie Neill then singled through the left side, scoring Koplitz.
The Cardinal scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to add some insurance runs. Once again Koplitz led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Smith reached based on an error by the third baseman, while Koplitz moved to second. Howe laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the third baseman, scoring Koplitz. Missy Penna then singled to leftfield to score Smith.
Penna picked up her 15th win of the season, pitching a full seven innings, allowing only two hits while striking out seven on the afternoon. Bridgette Pagano took the loss for Long Beach State, allowing three runs on three hits in six innings of work.
Stanford will take on Ohio in their second game on Saturday.
