UCLA's Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Pacific
March 24, 2007
Los Angeles - Despite a furious two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth, the UCLA baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Pacific on Saturday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Senior right-hander Tyson Brummett (3-4) limited the Tigers to three runs off nine hits in 7.1 innings, recording five strikeouts and issuing just one walk.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Bruins (8-14) added one run with two outs before stranding men at first and second. Shortstop Brandon Crawford reached safely with a one-out single and took second base after left fielder Mickey Weisser was hit by a pitch. With sophomore Dustin Quist pinch-running for Weisser, designated hitter Casey Haerther laced a bloop single to center, scoring Crawford and sending Quist to second. Second baseman Alden Carrithers reached first on a bouncer deep in the hole to beyond third baseman Justin Baum, who fielded a throw from shortstop Dennis Hill to tag out Quist, who overran third base.
Pacific designated hitter Joey Centanni broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning, giving the Tigers a 4-2 advantage. Centanni's double brought home catcher Joe Oliveira and Hill.
The Tigers (7-17-1) took the game's first lead, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. With runners at first and second, Centanni brought home Oliveira from third with a single to right. Right fielder Zach Chamberlin plated Baum with a double down the right field line.
The Bruins cut the Tigers' lead in half with one run off one hit in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and center fielder Brady Dolan aboard second base, shortstop Brandon Crawford lined a single to right field, allowing Dolan to score. UCLA tied the contest, 2-2, on a two-out pinch-hit single to right-center field by senior Will Penniall in the bottom of the seventh.
Pacific starting pitcher David Rowse limited UCLA to two runs off four hits through 6.2 innings. The Tigers' left-hander struck out three Bruins and walked two. Pacific's David Hovey (1-0) earned his first victory of the season as he threw 0.1 scoreless innings.
UCLA returns to action Sunday, March 25, with a 1 p.m. start against Pacific. Bruin right-hander Brant Rustich makes his first start of the season for UCLA and will face Pacific right-hander Hunter Carnevale.
