Duda Delivers Walk-Off Win In 9th As No. 19 USC Beats No. 17 Arizona State, 14-13
March 25, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Junior left fielder Lucas Duda (Riverside/Arlington HS) had a career-high two home runs and six RBI, including a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, as the No. 19 USC Trojans defeated the No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils, 14-13. The Trojans avoided the series sweep after the Sun Devils scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead.
Duda hit the game-winner with two outs in the ninth off Jason Jarvis (0-1) after hitting a grand slam earlier in the game.
USC improved to 17-12 on the season and 1-2 in Pac-10 Conference play.
Brett Wallace went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI for Arizona State (21-8, 2-1), reaching base in all six plate appearances.
Wallace tied the game at 12-12 after leading off in the top of the ninth with his second homer of the game to center off USC closer Paul Koss (2-1). Rocky Laguna later drove home the go-ahead run with an RBI single.
Jarvis retired the first two batters before facing USC first baseman Derek Perren. Perren, who flied out to end the game against Jarvis in Saturday's 4-3 loss, exacted some revenge with a single up the middle before Duda ended the game on a 1-1 count to right field.
ASU had a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Wallace led off the game with a walk and back-to-back singles by Sogard and Tim Smith loaded the bases for Ike Davis, who blasted a grand slam to right center with his fourth homer of the game. The Sun Devils hit four home runs in the game.
After Wallace hit his first home run with a two-run shot to left in the sixth for the 9-4 advantage, the Trojans exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two key errors by ASU third baseman Joe Persichina set the stage as Duda blasted his grand slam to center to take the 11-9 lead. Hector Rabago added an RBI single for the 12-9 USC score.
Rabago finished with a 3-for-5 day and two RBI for the Trojans.
USC travels to UC Riverside on Tuesday (March 27) for a 5 p.m. game. that will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
