SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UCLA returned to action after 12 days off for winter quarter final exams and posted two victories at Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins took the first game of the day by a 3-0 margin and won game two by a score of 1-0. UCLA improves to 24-6 while Cal Poly falls to 24-9.
Game 1: UCLA 3, Cal Poly 0
UCLA posted an unearned run in the top of the first inning and added a Jodie Legaspi home run in the fifth en route to a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs in the first game of the day.
Krista Colburn started the day with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Kaila Shull. After a walk to Jodie Legaspi, Megan Langenfeld put a ball in play to the left side that was mis-handled by the Mustangs, allowing Colburn to score from second base to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Lisa Dodd led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when Legaspi pushed her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.
That was plenty of offense for UCLA starting pitcher Anjelica Selden. Selden twirled a three-hit shutout, striking out eight an not issuing a walk on the day to earn her 12th victory of the season.
Game 2: UCLA 1, Cal Poly 0
The Bruins put together a similar rally in the top of the second inning in game two. Colburn drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Shull. A single by Dodd gave the Bruins runners on the corners for Legaspi, who singled to right field to give UCLA a 1-0 lead.
UCLA came up with just one more hit on the day, but that was enough offense for freshman pitcher Megan Langenfeld, who pitched a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Bruins return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch against UCSB at Easton Stadium.
