UCLA Baseball Takes Series from Pacific with 8-3 Victory

Los Angeles - Freshman Gavin Brooks recorded a career-high eight strikeouts to lead the UCLA baseball team past Pacific, 8-3, Monday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Second baseman Alden Carrithers finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to help give UCLA the series victory over the visiting Tigers.
Brooks (2-3) allowed just two runs off three hits through 5.2 innings to earn his second victory of the season. Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool allowed one run off three hits in 3.1 innings of relief to earn his second save. Pacific right-hander Jake Wild (1-4) absorbed the loss, allowing six runs off five hits in 2.0 innings.
UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and led 8-0 after three. Carrithers doubled to left-center field, plating designated hitter Will Penniall from second. Shortstop Brandon Crawford brought home Carrithers with a double to the right-center field gap.
In UCLA's six-run third inning, Penniall led off with a single to right. Carrithers followed a two-run blast over the right field fence. Crawford walked, and first baseman Cody Decker reached on an infield single. Left fielder Mickey Weisser was safe at first with on a sacrifice bunt when Pacific pitcher Brett Manning bobbled the ball. With the bases loaded, right fielder Gabe Cohen lined a double to left, scoring Decker and Crawford. Weisser gave UCLA a 7-0 cushion when he scored on a wild pitch. Babineau brought home Cohen with a sacrifice fly to right.
Pacific answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Third baseman Justin Baum put the Tigers on the board with a solo home run to right. Designated hitter Joey Centanni reached first on a walk, and scored on right fielder Zach Chamberlin's double to left field. Pacific added its third run in the top of the ninth.
The Bruins return to action at 6 p.m. Friday, March 30, when they begin Pac-10 play at Stanford University. UCLA and Stanford continue the three-game series Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game Notes: Gavin Brooks topped his previous career high of five strikeouts when he fanned his sixth batter of the afternoon - Dennis Hill - in the top of the second...five Bruins tallied multi-hit games, and Alden Carrithers led all players with three RBI.
