Washington State's Ekaterina Burduli Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
March 26, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON STATE junior Ekaterina Burduli has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Cougars' top player led WSU to its first Pac-10 win of the season in its only match last week, scoring a major upset of No. 23 Oregon. Washington State captured the doubles point, and the top four singles matches to upend the Ducks, 5-2, and avenge a 6-1 loss to the Ducks in the season's earlier non-conference encounter.
In both singles and doubles, Burduli struck first. Teaming with Marjolein van de Ven at No. 1 doubles, Burduli handled Oregon's Dominika Dieskova and Ana Cecilia Olivos, 8-5, to set the stage for a 9-7 WSU win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point, 2-1.
On the singles court, Burduli routed Dieskova, 6-3, 6-0, reversing a loss from the teams' previous match. Burduli's win gave the Cougars a 2-0 cushion.
The native of Tel Aviv, Israel has won her past three singles matches and is 18-12 in singles play this year.
The win improved the Cougars to 12-7 on the year and 1-4 in Pac-10 play. It was the first victory over Oregon since the 2004 season, and was the highest-ranked opponent WSU has defeated since that same 2004 victory over the Ducks, who were again ranked 23rd.
Washington State plays one non-conference match this week, visiting Boise State on Sunday.
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Burduli, and the second all-time for Washington State.
