PULLMAN, Wash. - Jared Prince's RBI double in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Scott Suttmeier with the winning run as Washington State University defeated Brigham Young, 4-3, in 12 innings in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday at Bailey-Brayton Field. In the nightcap Jayson Miller fired the first complete game by a Cougar since the 2004 season as WSU completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory.

With the two wins WSU improves to 15-10 on the season while BYU falls to 14-12.

In Game One, Prince's two-out double to the gap in right-center scored Suttmeier from second as the Cougars snapped a three-game skid. It was Prince's third RBI of the game and came on his first hit. Prince's RBI groundout in the first brought home the first Cougar run while his sacrifice fly in the eighth tied the game at 3-3.

BYU jumped to a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Kasey Ko and Stephen Wells led off with back-to-back singles then both scored on Austin Hall's two-run single to center. WSU starter Matt Way retired the first two BYU batters in the sixth on two pitches, but then walked the bases loaded before giving way to Michael Ratigan. Ratigan induced J. T. Musso into a flyout to center, ending the threat and keeping the BYU lead at 2-1.

BYU starter Jesse Craig looked strong after a shaky first inning. Craig allowed two hits in that first frame, but following a one-out double to Scott Suttmeier in the third, he retired 11 straight batters before hitting Jim Murphy to lead off the seventh. One out later Murphy scored on an infield out off the bat of Greg Lagreid, tying the game at 2-2.

Ross Humes picked up the win for WSU, improving to 2-1 on the season as he went the final four innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Humes was the fifth WSU pitcher on the game. Suttmeier led WSU with two of the Cougars' five hits in the game.

Matt Jensen suffered the loss as he allowed only the one hit in 4 1/3 innings of work as he fell to 2-3. Craig went the first seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. BYU pounded out 10 hits in the opener with four different players collecting multi-hit games.

In Game Two, it was the Jayson Miller show. Miller went the distance, surrendering just one run on eight hits with six strikeouts. Miller becomes the first Cougar pitcher to throw a complete game since Bryce Chamberlain did so in a 17-2 win over Utah Valley State, Mar. 6, 2004.

WSU struck early as Prince reached on a walk leading off the second then scored one out later on a wild pitch. WSU added another run in the sixth as it collected two hits, its first two of the game. Greg Lagreid led off with a single to left, was sacrificed to second, and then scored on Suttmeier's sharp single to left-center.

That was enough for Miller who threw 109 pitches on the night, allowing only singles while retiring 11 straight at one point midway through the game. In the ninth BYU scored its only run as Chase Frampton led off with a single then one out later scored on Wes Guenther's groundout to third.

WSU collected just three hits in the nightcap, one each by Suttmeier, Lagreid and Jeff Miller.

BYU had eight hits on the evening, two each by Wells and Thomas Bills. Blaine Howell started and suffered the loss, though he threw well, working seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

WSU returns to the diamond Friday when he travels south to face California in the opening of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series.
