WSU Eighth in 800m Free Relay at U.S. Spring Nationals

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Washington State 800m freestyle relay team of Kayli Changstrom, Erin McCleave, Shawna Keller and Michaela Ahlin combined for a time of 8:31.02 in the event to place eighth overall in the finals on the third day of competition at the U.S. Spring National Championships.

Changstrom led off the squad with a lifetime best split time of 2:08.81 in the event preliminaries Thursday morning. Keller and Ahlin also turned in lifetime best split times of 2:09.97 and 2:07.67, respectively. The Cougars advanced to the finals seeded first overall.

In the 200m freestyle, senior Erin McCleave advanced to the event finals as she finished 21st with a time of 2:05.58. The All-American captured first place in the 200m freestyle 'C' final with a time of 2:03.52. Earlier in the competition, McCleave finished seventh overall in the 800m freestyle Tuesday. Her time of 8:46.25 in the event preliminaries is an Australian consideration standard time for competing at the World University Games, an event to be held in Bangkok in August 2007.

Freshman Michaela Ahlin swam a lifetime best time of 2:08.61 in the 200m freestyle to finish 60th while Kayli Changstrom's time of 5:06.01 placed her 37th in the 400m individual medley.

Competition continues Friday beginning with the 100m backstroke, featuring WSU's Afton Pickett. McCleave will swim the 400m freestyle while Bryn Mooney and Michaela Ahlin compete in the 100m butterfly. As a team, a WSU relay squad will compete in the 400m freestyle relay.
