Offense Get Advantage in First Spring Scrimmage

March 30, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University offense accounted five touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground, during the first full scrimmage of the spring season Friday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

'For the first scrimmage, I thought the tackling was crisp, defensively we played the run well and offensively I thought we threw the ball well,' said WSU head coach Bill Doba. 'Defensively we gave up some scores but we played just base stuff. The things we gave up were the long pass, which was good for the offense. I thought we threw the ball well, Gary (Rogers) made a couple really nice passes.'

The Cougar offense accounted for 371 total yards, 260 through the passing game and 111 on the ground, on a beautiful sunny day in Pullman. Senior Alex Brink found Keith Rosenberg for a 24-yard touchdown for the first score of the afternoon. The Cougars also found the end zone twice more with the passing game as junior Gary Rogers connected with Michael Bumpus on a nine-yard strike then it was Rogers to Charles Dillon for a 10-yard score.

Redshirt freshman Marcus Richmond accounted for both rushing touchdowns on a 25-yard burst and then a two-yard score. Richmond finished the afternoon with 40 yards rushing on 12 carries. Another redshirt freshman, Chris Ivory, led all rushers with 60 yards on eight carries, including three runs of 14 or more yards.

Rogers ended his day 9-of-13 for 147 yards and two scores, while Brink was 7-of-8 for 53 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Cole Morgan also took snaps as he finished 12-of-24 for 60 yards.

On the receiving end 11 different receivers made catches on the afternoon, with Dillon grabbing six for 82 yards and a score. Bumpus also had six for 40 yards and a touchdown while Richmond finished with four for 68 yards, including the 24-yard touchdown grab.

On the other side of the ball the Cougar defense forced a pair of fumbles, one that senior Christian Bass returned 68 yards from his own two-yard line.

The Cougars resume spring practice Monday afternoon while the next scrimmage will take place Friday, April 6 at Martin Stadium.
