Trio of Cougar Women Reach NCAA RQ in Steeplechase at Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif. -- Three Washington State University women steeplechase racers provided the highlight of the day for the Cougars as they ran NCAA Regional Qualifying times at the Stanford Invitational Track & Field Meet Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Sophomore Sara Trané (Sweden) ran the second-fastest women's 3000m steeplechase in WSU history when she finished third in the section 2 race with a lifetime-best and NCAA RQ time of 10 minutes, 33.74 seconds. Cougar teammates Collier Lawrence (junior, Reno, Nev.) and Kayle Peterson (senior, Port Orchard, Wash.) also reached PRs and NCAA RQ times as they finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the same race. Lawrence ran a time of 10:41.14, knocking eight seconds off her previous PR and Peterson clocked in a time of 10:43.83, taking 10 seconds off her previous PR. Lawrence's time is fourth-best and Peterson's time is fifth-best in school history.

In the men's 3000m steeplechase section 3 race, Alex Grant took second place with a time of 9:07.35, just 35/100s of a second off the NCAA RQ time, and Sam Ahlbeck ran a PR time of 9:09.43 for third place.

Freshman Princess Joy Griffey will compete in a Saturday final after running the fourth-best 100m dash prelim time of 11.97 seconds. La Shawnda Porter's 100m time of 12.19 was 11th. In the 200m, Griffey's time of 24.42 was 10th, Porter-Red's time of 24.50 was 19th, Brandi Probasco-Canda's time of 25.03 was 22nd, and Selena Galaviz ran a time of 26.40 for 36th.

Using this meet to tune-up for the heptathlon competition at the Texas Relays next week, Diana Pickler ran a time of 13.49 seconds in the 100m hurdles prelims, third-fastest of the five heats, with the top nine advancing to the Saturday final. Julie Pickler false-started in the hurdles and will not compete in the final. Diana Pickler also long jumped 19-feet, 9 1/2 inches (6.03m) for third place and Julie leaped 19-1 1/2 (5.83m) for sixth place, both in the top section. Julie threw the javelin 127-7 (38.88m) for third place in the B section.

Other Cougar women's race results from Friday include Lorraine King's time of 64.80 in the 400m hurdles (19th), and a trio of 5000m racers: Meghan Leonard's time of 16:57.40 (2nd, section 4), Chelsea VanDeBrake's time of 17:28.35 (8th, section 5), and Kelly Ramirez's time of 17:29.25 (15th, section 4). McKinnon Hanson cleared 5-6 1/2 (1.69m) in the women's high jump for sixth place.

WSU men who competed on the track included Sadiki James who ran a 100m dash time of 11.20 (27th) and a 200m time of 22.59w (28th). Brian Woods ran a 200m time of 22.28 (22nd). Bob Hewitt Gaffney's 800m time of 1:53.47 was 20th in the B section race. Barry Leavitt ran a 100m hurdles time of 15.10 for 14th in prelims and also raced in the 400m hurdles where he finished ninth with a time of 53.52. Andrew Jones' 5000m time was 14:24.79 in the section 4 race (13th).

The Stanford Invitational Meet continues Saturday.
