TEMPE, Ariz. - Husky sophomore Ashley Houghting won a share of the Pac-10 vault title Saturday and placed seventh in the all-around, leading the Washington women's gymnastics team to a fifth-place finish at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships at Arizona State's Wells Fargo Arena.

Washington's team score of 194.775 was its second-highest away from home this season, and its highest at the Pac-10 Championships since 2004. Eighth-ranked UCLA upset No. 5 and defending-champion Stanford for the overall team title, scoring 197.200 points behind victories in three events and the all-around for junior Tasha Schwikert. The Cardinal were second at 196.950, followed by No. 9 Oregon State (196.300), No. 15 Arizona (196.000), Washington (194.775), No. 25 Arizona State (194.550) and Cal (193.650).

The story for the Huskies, however, was Houghting's win on vault, the first by a Husky at the Pac-10 meet since Molly Seaman captured the conference bars crown in 2004. A sophomore from Welland, Ont., Houghting justified her No. 6 national ranking on vault with a career-high equaling 9.950 to match Schwikert for the Pac-10 crown. Houghting has scored above a 9.925 in five-consecutive vault competitions and boasts 16 victories all-time on the apparatus, crushing the previous UW record of 12 set by All-American Klara Kudilkova.

Houghting also scored career-highs on bars (9.825) and beam (9.825), and a 9.800 on floor to finish with a 39.400 in the all-around, good for seventh overall at the Pac-10 meet.

Houghting's win, combined with a 9.900 by freshman Cassidy Lance and a 9.850 by junior Natalie Gillan, carried the Huskies to a 49.125 on vault, and helped the team recover from a difficult floor rotation while setting the stage for later success on bars (48.900) and beam (48.550). Washington's bars score, which included career-high 9.850s for Houghting, Gillan and junior Raimey Iselin, matched the team's highest bars score of the year and equaled the third-highest among the seven teams competing Saturday.

Washington's high score will further boost its regional qualifying score in advance of the NCAA Regional meet in two weeks' time, at which point qualifying berths for April's NCAA Championships will be determined.
