Men's Golfers Sixth in Wichita

Apr 2, 2007

WICHITA, Kan. - With winds gusting at 30 mph and a player sent to the emergency room, the University of Colorado men's golf team persevered through some unusual obstacles to finish the first day of the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic hosted by Wichita State on Monday.

After the first two rounds, the Buffs are in sixth place with a 31-over par 599 score.

Senior Blake Moore was taken to the emergency room after becoming severely dehydrated with a high fever. He is back with the team and recuperating well, but head coach Roy Edwards said Moore will not be available Tuesday. After finishing the first round tied for 24th with a 5-over par 74, Moore's second round score did not count and the team played with only four players scoring.

"There were very tough conditions out there today," Edwards said. "We did a good job knowing that we had to count all four guys who were out on the course."

Junior Patrick Grady paced the Buffs with a 3-over par 145 score through two rounds, tying him for seventh place among individuals. After the first round he was tied for third overall with a 1-over par 70 score.

"Pat played solid and I'm really happy with his performance," Edwards said.

The Buffaloes recorded a 17-over 193 score in round one of the tournament and were only six strokes out of the lead and just three strokes away from second place.

The Buffs exploited an early advantage in the longer holes, as they led all teams with a combined 5-under par in par 5 holes during the first round. Sophomore Derek Tolan and Moore were each 2-under par in par 5 holes.

Junior Michael Baird was tied for 59th after the first round, shooting 8-over par with a 77 score. In the second round, he came on strong and only Bruno Buccolo of Oklahoma Christian (tied for the overall lead), had a better afternoon as Baird shot a 2-under par 71 score. He currently stands tied for 19th with a 6-over par 148 score.                .

"It was really important to get a good score out of Michael," Edwards said. "He had a tough first round, but I'm proud of the way he came back in the second."

Tolan finished the day tied for 39th with an 11-over par 153 score, and senior Ryan Anderson finished 13-over par with a 155 score. Freshman Luke Symons shot the same 13-over par, 155 score as Anderson while playing individually.

The Buffs will be shorthanded Tuesday as they play with the minimum four golfers.

"I think we will respond really well," Edwards said. "It's a great opportunity to come out and be confident knowing that every shot will count."

The Buffaloes will finish the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MDT.
