Cougar Women Gaining Ground at BYU Dixie Classic

April 3, 2007

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Playing on an unfamiliar course, the Washington State Women's Golf Team opened up the first day of play of the BYU Dixie Classic, being played on the par-72, 6,029 yard Entrada Golf Course, in 11th place.

The Cougars shot a 316 in the first round and improved by ten strokes in the second round for a score of 306. The team's score at the end of the day was 622.

'We hit the ball well today, just not in the right places,' said Head Golf Coach Walt Williams. 'This is a hard course which requires a lot of local knowledge. After going through all the holes once we became more familiar with the terrain.'

Leading the Cougar contingent is freshman Diana Hong, who shot a 76 in both the first and second rounds of the tournament. Hong finished with a score of 152 (+8) and in a tie for 17th. Junior Tracy Broders finished the day five strokes behind Hong with a score of 157 (+13). Broders shot an 82 in the first round but improved to a 75 by the end of the second round.

'Diana played very solid for us today,' Williams said. 'Tracy also did a great job in the second round.'

Matching Broders' score of 157 (+13) was junior Brooke Henderson, who shot a 79 in the first round followed by a 78 in the second round. Sophomore Amy Eneroth finished the day in a tie for 46th with a score of 158 (+14). Rounding out the Cougar roster is sophomore Jessica Black, who finished the first day with a score of 165 (+21).

'Tomorrow we should do good because we are more familiar with the course,' Williams said. 'We're in striking distance with a lot of these teams so tomorrow we have a chance to really improve our standings.'
