April 5, 2007
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Hopkins went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI Thursday as the No. 9 Oregon State Beavers opened a Pac-10 Conference series with a 9-5 victory over the No. 25 USC Trojans at Goss Stadium/Coleman Field. Hopkins hit an RBI single to start a three-run third inning to key the victory.
Mike Stutes (7-1) earned the win for Oregon State (24-6, 1-3) with 6 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six Trojans. John Wallace and Darwin Barney had two RBI each for the Beavers. Oregon State has won 12 straight home games, dating back to the 2006 season.
J.J. Owen had a big night for the Trojans (18-13, 1-3), hitting two home runs with a solo shot in the sixth and two-run homer in the seventh.
Hopkins plated Koa Kahalehoe in the third for the first run of the game. Kahalehoe was hit by a pitch from Ryan Cook (4-2) and stole second before Hopkins' hit. Hopkins then stole his 11th base of the season and scored on John Wallace's RBI single. The third straight RBI single by OSU from Barney produced the third run of the inning.
OSU had a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning after Hopkins hit a two-run double off Cook, who gave up five runs on five hits.
The Trojans had a chance in the seventh, down by three runs after Nick Buss hit his second double of the game to put runners at second and third. Grant Green grounded out to short as Darwin Barney beat Green's head-first slide by a step to end the threat. OSU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, including an RBI double by Barney.
The series continues tomorrow with a 5 p.m. start and a noon game time for Saturday's series finale. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
