No. 25 USC Evens Pac-10 Series With 4-1 Win At No. 9 Oregon State

April 6, 2007

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Lucas Duda (Riverside/Arlington HS) hit his second triple of the game Friday with a two-run shot down the first base line for the go-ahead runs as the No. 25 USC Trojans defeated the No. 9 Oregon State Beavers to even the Pac-10 Conference series. USC snapped Oregon State's 12-game winning streak at home, dating back to the 2006 season.

Duda has a seven-game hitting streak for USC (19-13, 2-3), batting .500 (14-for-28) with 10 RBI.

Freshman Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothill HS) had another effective start for the Trojans, allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The right-hander has made six of eight starts on the road this season and is now 2-2 with a 2.13 ERA (.186 opponents' batting average). He has allowed only six earned runs in 37 innings on the road this season for a 1.46 ERA.

Senior closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) picked up his 12th save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth to preserve the victory. Koss is 2-1 on the season with a 1.56 ERA.

Joe Paterson (5-3) took the loss for Oregon State (24-7, 1-4) despite allowing just one hit through five innings. Mitch Canham gave OSU the 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single to score Darwin Barney from second. USC freshman Hector Rabago (Riverside/Poly HS) tied the game in the sixth with his first collegiate home run, lacing a line drive over the 14-foot fence in left. The Trojans loaded the bases, but Paterson struck out Buss to end the USC sixth.

J.J. Owen singled to right in the USC eighth to put runners at first and third before Duda lined a hard ground ball that went over the glove of a diving Jordan Lennerton at first base for the 3-1 lead. Buss later scored Duda on a two-strike count by hitting an RBI single to complete the scoring.

Barney and Canham both singled off USC reliever Robert Stock in the eighth and no outs, before Stock struck out Mike Lissman and got Lennerton to ground out into a key 3-6-3 double play turned nicely by Derek Perren at first.

The series finale takes place tomorrow at noon with USC's Anthony Vasquez scheduled to go against OSU's Daniel Turpin. The game will be broadcast live on
