Cougars Clawed By No. 5 California, 6-0

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington State women's tennis team suffered a 6-0 loss to fifth-ranked California Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center.

The loss dropped the Cougars to 13-10 and fell to 1-6 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while host California improved to 19-3 and 5-0 in Pac-10 play.

The Bears struck first in the No. 6 slot after Claire Ilcinkas used straight-sets to beat Anastesia Opata, 6-1, 6-1. California kept the attack on in the No. 2 slot as 19th ranked Nina Henkel clipped Amy Toth, 6-3, 6-2. California's Stephanie Kusano downed Marjolein van de Ven, 6-1, 6-2, to increase the Bears lead to three.

No. 4 Susie Babos, last years NCAA Singles Champion, secured the California win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Burduli in the top spot. Burduli dropped the first set, but battled in the second set to even it at three. Babos closed it out by capturing the final three games clinching the set and the match.

California would complete its sweep in singles play with victories in the No. 5 and 4 slots. California increased its winning streak to 11 after the Saturday win.

Due to a rain delay the doubles portion of the match was not played. The Cougars return to action for its final home match of the season against UC Santa Barbara, Saturday, April 7 at noon.
