Errors Costly as Cougars Fall to USC, 9-5

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Robert Stock drove in a pair of runs and the Trojans capitalized on four Cougar errors as USC defeated Washington State 9-5 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.

The loss snaps the Cougars' four-game winning streak as they fall to 21-19 on the season, 4-10 in conference play. USC improved to 22-22, 5-9 in Pac-10 action.

The Trojans jumped to a 6-1 lead in the second, capitalizing on two Cougar miscues. A leadoff walk followed by back-to-back singles by Hector Estrella and Stock brought home the first run. Another single by Spencer Pabst loaded the bases for Matt Cusick, who singled home Estrella for the second run of the inning. The final three runs came courtesy of the Cougar errors, allowing three more unearned runs to cross the plate.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the first, taking advantage of a leadoff single and a pair of Cougar throwing errors for the 1-0 lead.

WSU was still in the game as it pushed across a run in the second when Paul Gran led off by getting hit, stole second, then scored on Jeff Miller's RBI single up the middle. The Cougars added two runs in the third as with the bases loaded, Scott Suttmeier's fielder's choice brought home Josh Ashenbrenner, who led off with a single. Jared Prince then lined a sacrifice fly to right, plating Matt Fanelli as the Cougars trailed 6-3 at that point.

WSU added another run in the fourth on an RBI groundout off the bat of Greg Lagreid that brought WSU to within two at 6-4. Simi Reynolds led off with a walk, moved to third on Miller's double to the gap in right-center, then scored on Lagreid's infield RBI.

USC regained a three-run lead in the fourth when Cusick came home on a double steal attempt as WSU took the out at second. Two more runs in the fifth pushed the lead to 9-4 as Michael Torres and Stock connected for RBIs in the frame.

Miller capped his three-hit day in the eighth as he connected for his team-leading seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to close out the Cougar scoring.

Cougar starter Nick Ison suffered the loss as he worked five innings, allowing nine runs, six earned, on nine hits. All nine Trojan hits on the afternoon were singles, with Cusick and Estrella leading the way with two each. Connor Lambert and Nick Cebula combined for the final three innings of hitless relief.

Offensive Miller had three hits and two RBIs, needing only a triple to hit for the cycle. Prince added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Trojans starter Ryan Cook worked out a trouble a few times as he picked up his sixth win of the season, going seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

These same two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field First pitch is scheduled for noon.
