May 2, 2007
BERKELEY - The California Golden Bear women's gymnastics team finished the 2007 season ranked No. 26 in the Troester Poll released this week. This was the highest final ranking the Bears received since the 2004 season when they finished ranked 25th.
Entering the NCAA West Regional, Cal was ranked 37th nationally. The team jumped 11 positions to their final position.
The Bears wrapped up the season at the NCAA West Regional on April 14 where they finished fourth with a team score of 193.900. Seniors Justine Cephus, Isabel Garcia and Elyse Wong also completed their Cal careers at the Regional.
During the season Cal posted the second-best team score in school history of 196.500 at the UC Davis quad meet on March 23. In California women's gymnastics history a 196.000 or higher has only been accomplished six times after this season's record-setting performances. In the same meet the team notched school's third-best scores on the bars (49.325) and beam (49.225).
Individually, four gymnasts hit a 9.900 or higher on the different events throughout the season. Sophomore Bridgette Glass scored two 9.900 on the bars and beam at the UC Davis quad meet. Also at the UC Davis quad meet, Jessica Kelley notched her first career 9.900 on the beam, tying with Glass to win the event. During the tri-meet against Penn and Air Force Garcia scored a 9.925 on the vault. In the same meet, Lydia Williams scored a 9.900 on the bars.
