USC's Track And Field Team Gets Final Tune-up Before Pac-10 Championships

LOS ANGELES - Senior Tara Davis-Quarrie won the women's 400m race to lead the Trojans today (May 5) at the Claremont Classic in Claremont, Calif. in USC's final meet before next week's Pac-10 Championships.

Davis-Quarrie established a new PR with a time of 54.66 to win the 19-women 400m field. She beat her old personal best by .06 seconds, but came up .05 seconds short of an automatic NCAA Regional qualifying time. Teammate Judith Onyepunuka placed third in the race with a time of 56.57.

Jamila Marston placed seventh in the women's long jump with a season best wind-aided effort of 17-1 1/4 (5.21m), while Nicole Anthony placed 10th with a jump of 16-1 (4.90m).

Melissa Margulies ran in the women's 800m and placed 12th with a time of 2:19.50. Chun Mei Nickles was tied for fourth in the pole vault with a clearance at 11-7 3/4 (3.55m), while Kenisha Strong tied for 14th at 10-2 (3.10m).

For the men, Jason Price established a new PR in the 400m race and placed sixth with a time of 48.30. Russell Ellis came in 18th with a time of 50.87.

Andrew Gausepohl placed 18th in the men's 800m race with a time of 1:56.47, while Daniel Martin came in 34th with a time of 2:03.01.

Taking third place in their events were Brandon Estrada in the pole vault (16-2 3/4) and Ben Brown in the triple jump (45-4 1/2).

In yesterday's men's hammer competition, Adam Midles placed second (215-11), Noah Bryant third (214-11, one-half inch off his PR), Mike Curiel 10th (175-11, a new PR), Jekabs Sliede 12th (172-3) and Brian Wilhelm 13th (167-2).
