Beavers Even Series with 11-5 Win Over Cougars
May 12, 2007
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Mike Lissman's three-run home run highlighted a five-run seventh inning as No. 15 Oregon State defeated Washington State 11-5 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium. The Cougars (24-22, 7-13) captured the series-opener 5-4 Friday evening.
Clinging to a two-run lead in the seventh, the Beavers (36-12, 8-9) broke the game open by stringing together four hits. Mitch Canham's double put runners on second and third with one out. An intentional walk to Darwin Barney loaded the bases before a wild pitch brought home the first run of the frame. Lissman followed with his sixth home run of the season before coming home on Jordan Lennerton's triple to center.
The five runs came off a Cougar bullpen that had allowed just one run over the last 13 1/3 innings entering today's seventh, a stretch of five games.
Lennerton gave the Beavers their first lead of the series in the fourth, connecting for a three-run double and the 4-1 advantage.
For the second straight day the Cougars struck first, putting up a run in the third. A pair of walks sandwiched around a Paul Gran single loaded the bases with one out. Jim Murphy delivered a single to right, scoring Travis Coulter for the games first run. The Beavers followed WSU's third inning run with one of their own. After retiring the first seven batters he faced, Cougar starter Nick Ison surrendered a one-out single to Chris Hopkins, scoring Erik Ammon to tie the game.
WSU tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth as Zach Borba singled home Simi Reynolds, who reached base via his third triple of the season. Borba then scored on pinch-hitter Josh Ashenbrenner's double to left. In the ninth Miller singled and came home on Reynolds' RBI double to the gap in right-center, the final run of the game.
Ison was forced to leave the game with two outs and two on in the fifth trailing 4-2. Ison's 1-1 pitch to Barney missed high but he came up sore and had to leave the game. Ison suffered the loss as his record falls to 4-7 after allowing four runs on eight hits with a season-high seven strikeouts. He was the first of three Cougar pitchers used on the afternoon.
Gran and Reynolds continued their hot play, each collecting three hits to lead a 15-hit Cougar attack.
Daniel Turpen, who entered for Oregon State starter Joe Paterson with two outs and two on in the fifth, picked up the win as he worked three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Eddie Kunz closed out the final 1 1/13 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Offensively, Chris Hopkins led the way with three hits while Lennerton and Lissman each drove in three.
These same two teams conclude their three-game Pacific-10 Conference series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
