WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman Megan Langenfeld has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for May 8-14, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Langenfeld continued her fine late season play, leading UCLA to road wins at Arizona and Arizona State last week. The Bakersfield, Calif. native became the only pitcher in the Conference this season to win games in the same weekend against the Wildcats and Sun Devils, outdueling Arizona's Taryne Mowatt and Arizona State's Katie Burkhart, who have combined for seven Pitcher of the Week awards between them this year.

Last Thursday, Langenfeld helped the Bruins snap Arizona's 17-game home winning streak by a 7-4 count. Langenfeld went the full seven innings, giving up eight hits and four runs, but only two were earned. All four UA runs came in the second inning, from which point Langenfeld shut out the Wildcats. The win gave UCLA a win in the season series for the third-straight year, and a fourth consecutive win at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Friday at Arizona State, Langenfeld wove another complete game win, once again allowing eight hits and two earned runs as UCLA got the best of ASU, 4-3. The freshman struck out six in improving to 13-2.

UCLA went down in Saturday's regular season finale with the Sun Devils by a 7-4 margin, but Langenfeld was effective again appearing in relief. She threw the final two innings, giving up just a hit and a walk.

For the week, Langenfeld posted a 2-0 record with a 1.75 ERA and 10 strikeouts. She pitched 16 of UCLA's 20 innings on the week. Langenfeld finished second in the league with a 1.48 ERA in Pac-10 games. She becomes the first UCLA pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Week this year, as well as the first freshman to earn the honor.

UCLA (36-15) finished in a tie for third in the Pac-10 at 12-9. The Bruins are the 12th seed in the NCAA Championships, and host their regional which begins on Friday with a 5 p.m. game vs. UC Santa Barbara.

This is Langenfeld's first career Pitcher of the Week honor, however she was also named Player of the Week on Mar. 13 of this season for her work at the plate. It is the 98th Player/Pitcher of the Week award all-time for UCLA.
