Bruins Race to First Place at NCAA West Regional

May 17, 2007

The fourth-ranked UCLA men's golf team raced to the first round lead at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Arizona State University at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

The Bruins posted an impressive score of 868 (-20) and led South Carolina by five shots. Host ASU and New Mexico were tied for third at 275 (-13) followed by Stanford, USC and Pepperdine at 277 (-11). East Tennessee State was eighth at 278 (-10), followed by Cal at 280 (-8) and Oregon State and UNLV at 281 (-9).

The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championship in Williamsburg, VA, May 30-June 3.

'It was a good day for us; we got off to a very good start when Lucas (Lee) eagled the first hole,' said UCLA Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'Erik (Flores) played the kind of golf we're used to seeing him play. The difference today was that we got off to a good start and we were able to keep it going.'

The Bruins' 20-under par score set a school record for a single round. In the five-count-four team format, UCLA tossed out a one-under par 71.

Freshman Erik Flores went out in 31 (-4) and came in at 33 (-4). His card featured six birdies and an eagle. His 64 (-8) gave him a one-stroke first round lead and it was his best collegiate score.

Junior Kevin Chappell trailed Flores by two at 66 (-6) and was tied for third place. Chappell, winner of last year's East Regional, sported four birdies, and an eagle three at the 10th hole.

Junior Daniel Im and freshman Jason Kang were tied for 55th at three-under par 69. Im was working on a five-under par round before carding bogeys at the 17th and 18th holes. Bogeys at the par 3 12th and 16th holes also kept Kang from scoring better. Sophomore Lucas Lee double-bogeyed the 18th hole for a 71 (-1) and was tied for 55th.

'Tomorrow we tee off earlier, and we start on No. 10,' continued Vincent. 'Typically, the back nine doesn't yield the kind of scores that the front nine does. We'll just have to be patient and take it one shot at a time.'

The second and third rounds continue on Friday and Saturday.
