UCLA Falls to Cal State Fullerton, 12-2, in Super Regional Opener

FULLERTON, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team dropped a 12-2 decision at Cal State Fullerton in game one of the NCAA Super Regionals Saturday evening. Sophomore shortstop Brandon Crawford led the Bruins' offense, hitting 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Cal State Fullerton right-hander Wes Roemer (11-6) hurled his seventh complete game of the season, striking out seven without issuing a walk to earn the victory. UCLA right-hander Tyson Brummett (10-6) absorbed the loss, surrendering nine runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Second baseman Alden Carrithers and center fielder Justin Uribe each recorded 2-for-4 efforts at the plate. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis and first baseman Tim Stewart each scored one run for the Bruins.

The Titans (37-23) led from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to assume a 6-1 advantage. Cal State Fullerton's first five runs were scored with two outs in each of the first two innings. In the top of the first, designated hitter Chris Jones had an RBI-single and third baseman Evan McArthur lined a base hit to left field, scoring two runs.

UCLA (33-27) scored its first run on a single by Crawford in the bottom of the first.

Cal State Fullerton scored twice in the second, once in the third and three times in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. Catcher John Curtis and Jones each connected with RBI-singles in the second frame. Center fielder Clark Hardman plated third baseman Evan McArthur in the third inning on a sacrifice fly.

First baseman Josh Fellhauer headlined the Titans' three-run fifth inning with a two-RBI double. UCLA scored its second run on an RBI-single by Crawford.

Cal State Fullerton added two more runs in the top of the ninth to lead 12-2. The Titans scored once on a wild pitch and added one more run on an RBI-single by Hardman.

The Bruins and Titans return to action Sunday at 7 p.m. at Goodwin Field. UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks takes the hill for the Bruins and will face Cal State Fullerton right-hander Jeff Kaplan. Sunday's game can be viewed on ESPN2 - Dave Cohen and Robin Ventura will have the call.
