Bruins Play Key Roles In U.S. U-20 Win Over Poland
July 3, 2007
UCLA juniors Sal Zizzo and Tony Beltran had big assists in the United States' 6-1 victory over Poland at the 2007 FIFA World Championships in Montreal Tuesday afternoon. Beltran's cross to Danny Szetela in the box tied the score at 1-1 in the 10th minute, then Zizzo connected twice in a row with Freddy Adu to put the U.S. ahead 3-1 at halftime.
Beltran's assist came with the U.S. down 1-0 after a quick sixth-minute goal by Poland's Dawid Janczyk. On the right side of the field, Beltran sent in a perfect cross to Szetela just inside the box. Szetela headed the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
Zizzo, who terrorized the Polish defense on the right side with his speed, assisted on what turned out to be the game-winner in the 20th minute. Zizzo won a ball at midfield and advanced it forward, splitting two defenders on a pass to Adu. The U.S. captain made a nifty spin move and unleased a shot that pinged the left post and went in. In stoppage time, the two connected once again. After making a steal, Zizzo raced down the right flank with two defenders chasing. With another defender closing in, Zizzo beat his man and passed back to Adu, who finished with a powerful strike into the upper left corner.
The U.S. netted three more goals in the second half, with Szetela scoring his third goal of the tournament in the 52nd minute. Josmer Altidore scored in the 70th minute, and Adu earned a hat trick in the 86th minute with his third goal of the game.
With the victory, the U.S. earns four points, putting them at the top of Group D with a chance to win the group for the third straight time. The U.S. will next face Brazil in the final Group D match on Friday, July 6, at 4:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on ESPNU and Galavision.
