USC Alum Tina Thompson Going Strong In WNBA
July 23, 2007
A 1997 USC graduate and an all-around dominating player during her Trojan career, Tina Thompson continues to shine on the basketball court. A first-round draft pick in the first year of WNBA action, Thompson most recently represented the Women of Troy at the WNBA All-Star Game. Usually accompanied by fellow USC grad and Trojan teammate Lisa Leslie -- who recently gave birth to her first child -- Thompson was the lone Trojan to appear at the All-Star game, but she definitely made her presence known.
Thompson is averaging 18.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Houston Comets, and at the All-Star game she provided a team-high 19 points for the West - nailing a game-high five 3-pointers - and added six rebounds and three assists. It was her eighth selection for the WNBA All-Star Game.
On the other end of the WNBA experience spectrum is rookie Shay Murphy, whose pro career is just beginning. It may take some time to get to the All-Star level of her fellow alums Thompson and Leslie, but Murphy is still working hard to improve and help her Minnesota Lynx squad. Murphy recently scored a WNBA career-high 14 points for the Lynx in a July 12 game at Houston. Her first double-double came on June 1 against the New York Liberty, when she tallied 11 points and ripped down 12 rebounds - just two shy of her USC career high.
