Men's Soccer Signs Nine Outstanding Recruits To 2007 Class

July 31, 2007

Stanford University men's soccer head coach Bret Simon announced the signing of an outstanding nine member recruiting class for the fall of 2007. Simon has high hopes for this special group of players. 'On paper the freshman class is the deepest and most talented group in the past decade. Many will be expected to quickly contribute, though the number of strong returning players should make that process of integrating the new players smoother and more gradual.'

The class features Taylor Amman, Shaun Culver, Garrett Gunther, Kevin Huang, Cameron Lamming, Daniel Leon, Ryan Thomas, Bobby Warshaw, and Dominique Yahyavi.

Taylor Amman (Santa Rosa, CA) - A tall, versatile player with good skills and exceptional passing ability. Standing at over 6 feet, Amman will be a presence in the air, especially off set pieces. He was noticed by the coaching staff at the Stanford's College ID Camp last summer, where he was named to the All-Star team. Amman also captained the under-17 Santa Rosa United and Santa Rosa High School where he was named to the NBL All League First Team.

Shuan Culver (Escondido, CA) - A tough, balling-winner central defender who can contribute in the midfield as well. Culver's physical presence will be a force to be reckoned with in the PAC10. He is extremely effective at winning balls in the air and is a tough tackler on the ground. Culver played an integral role for the San Diego Surf, who won the prestigious Surf Cup in '06.

Garrett Gunther (Long Beach, CA) - A clever midfielder with quick feet and great skill. Gunther can play both wide and central in midfield. He reads the game exceptionally well and provides service. Gunther has played with several teams in Southern California and is currently playing for the three-time defending national champions, Arsenal. He has also won a regional championship with the CAL South '89 and scored the game-winning goal in the final with a brilliant individual run. Gunther has been a member of the Region IV team and also part of the under-14 National Pool.

Kevin Huang (Potomac, MD) - A composed defender who can play anywhere in the backline or as a defensive midfielder. Huang's strong tactical awareness and composure on the ball earned him a trip to ESP in 2005, and again in 2006 where he was named to the All-Star team. Also in 2006, Huang was named an All-American by US Youth Soccer. He lead his club team, Bethesda United to three Maryland State Cup titles and two Region I Championships. Huang was selected as Rise Magazine's Class of 2007 Top 25 Soccer Recruits.

Cameron Lamming (San Juan Capistrano, CA) - A wide defender who likes to come forward and attack. His ability to read the game and his leadership qualities have helped him to succeed at the highest levels. He is a member of the three-time defending national champions, Arsenal, and he has captained the CAL South State team, the Region IV ODP team, and the under-18 National Team.

Daniel Leon (Mill Valley, CA) - A skillful player who can play forward or midfield. Leon is an accurate passer and has a good finishing sense. He is a good leader and has worn the captain band for both Marin United and San Francisco United. Leon has been a member of the CAL North state team and Region IV ODP team in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Ryan Thomas (Claremont, CA) - A wide midfielder with serious pace. Thomas's ability to run behind the defense and serve a quality ball has made him one of the nation's top recruits. Thomas is another member of the three-time defending national champions, Arsenal, and has been Cameron Lamming's teammate on the CAL South State team, Region IV ODP team, and the under-18 National Team. Thomas was also selected for ESP in 2005 and 2006 and to the Adidas 2006 All Star All-Euro team.

Bobby Warshaw (Mechanicsburg, PA) - A central midfield player who has great technical ability and sees the game at a high level. Warshaw has been a dominant player in Region I leading his Delco team to a regional championship in 2005. A familiar face with the Eastern Pennsylvania state and the Region I team, Bobby has also appeared with the under-17 and under-18 national teams. Bobby was an ESP All Star in 2006 and named PA Soccer Coaches Association and Gatorade State Player of the Year in the 2005 and 2006. Bobby was also named NSCAA Youth All America in 2004, 2005, 2006; and Parade All American in 2006 and 2007.

Dominique Yahyavi (Santa Barbara, CA) - A versatile player who is comfortable wide in the back or midfield. Yahyavi's ability to run at defenders stood out at the Stanford College ID Camp where he was named to the All-Star team. Yahyavi played with Santa Barbara FC and Real SoCAL before joining the three-time defending National Champions, Arsenal. Yahyavi also spent time in Brazil playing with Figureinse.
