No. 6 USC Weathers The Storm With 3-1 Win Over St. John's

LOS ANGELES - Senior Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland) recorded a team-high 19 kills and 24 points Saturday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 3-1 (30-28, 30-25, 22-30, 30-22), in the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center. Senior middle blocker Bethany Johansen (Los Gatos) collected 10 kills and seven block assists while freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach) did not have an attacking error with her 13 kills for a team-high .591 percentage (13-0-22).

Junior Jessica Gysin and senior Diane Copenhagen had double-doubles for USC (2-0), as Gysin registered 14 kills and 17 digs with Copenhagen earning 12 kills and 11 digs.

Latoya Blunt led the Red Storm (1-1) with 18 kills and a .438 afternoon (18-4-32) while Hui Ping Huang recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs.

USC hit .292 for the match while St. John's hit .254 with the Trojans holding an 11-5 margin in blocks.

Sophomore setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach) recorded 55 assists for the Women of Troy, adding two kills, 11 digs, a service ace, a solo block and a solo assist.

Both teams played to a 22-22 tie in game one. Gysin put two balls down as USC held a slim 25-23 lead. The Red Storm answered with three straight points, taking advantage of two attacking errors and a Trojan net violation for a 26-25 advantage. With a 27-26 SJU lead, Carico made a key stuff block to turn the momentum. Copenhagan added a kill and Kaczor closed it out for the game victory.

USC began to pull away in game two as a Kaczor service ace was part of a four-point streak, giving the Trojans a 19-12 lead. Carico's 310 kills made it a 28-21 score, but St. John's kept the pressure on. Four straight points, including three kills by Huang, put the Red Storm down 29-25 before a costly service error gave USC the 2-0 advantage in the match.

The key point in game three came with USC down 17-14. A Trojan service error led to a 9-1 run for the Red Storm as St. John's took the third game. St. John's hit a match-high .333 in the game, but USC turned the tables in game four. Kaczor took command with four kills and a service ace as the Trojans closed out the match with a 13-5 run.

The Trojan Invitational concludes with St. John's playing Michigan State at 5 p.m. and USC hosting Loyola Marymount. The match will be broadcast live on, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
