No. 6 USC Wins Trojan Invitational After 3-0 Sweep Of Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES - Senior outside hitter Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) recorded a team-high 12 kills and added 13 digs Saturday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy closed out the 2007 Trojan Invitational title with a 3-0 sweep (30-21, 32-30, 30-18) against the Loyola Marymount Lions at the Galen Center.
USC (3-0) utilized 13 different players in the match as the Trojans hit .309 as a team and committed only one service error.
Copenhagen hit .393 in the match (12-1-28), adding three block assists. Senior All-America outside hitter Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland) had nine kills and nine digs while freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) had nine kills and four blocks (two solo). Freshman Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) recorded four kills without an error, adding three digs and a block assist.
Heather Hughes led Loyola Marymount (1-2) with 15 kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Emily Day (Torrance) had 13 kills and 15 digs for the Lions.
In the first game, an 8-2 run by the Women of Troy put them ahead by a 22-14 score after Jessica Gysin's kill. Copenhagen salted the game victory with a kill as the team hit .344 in the game.
Game two finished with a series of streaks by both teams. USC had a 22-18 lead before LMU tied the game with four straight points. After USC head coach Mick Haley used his final timeout of the game, the Women of Troy responded with five straight, utilizing three kills by Copenhagen. Despite the 28-23 advantage, the Lions got a five-spot of their own, capping the run with a stuff block on Copenhagen. With the back-and-forth sequence, Garrett recorded the kill and an LMU attacking error gave the host Trojans a 2-0 match lead.
After the Trojans jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the third game, USC used a 12-4 run to put the match away. USC hit a match-high .400 in game three.
The Trojans will host the USC Classic next weekend at the Galen Center, Thursday-Saturday (Aug. 30-Sept. 1), and will feature Cal State Northridge, Duke and Mercer. All three USC matches will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
