Aug. 25, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. - The offense showed up for the Stanford men's soccer team Saturday night as the Cardinal posted a 5-1 exhibition victory over the Sacramento State Hornets at Maloney Field. The Cardinal used four unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and get the win.

Saturday night's contest served as the final tuneup for the Cardinal in preparation for the 2007 season, which kicks off Friday night, Aug. 31, with a 7 p.m. contest against defending national champion and No. 1-ranked UC Santa Barbara at Maloney Field.

Michael Strickland (Davis, CA) got the scoring started Saturday, finding the back of the net in the 29th minute, but the Hornets equalized on a Blake Nunes goal just under three minutes later.

Scott Bolkan (Salem, OR) put the Cardinal ahead for good, finishing a Strickland feed for the eventual game-winning score. Bobby Warshaw (Mechanicsburg, PA) then gave the Cardinal a 3-1 lead that they would take into the locker room, scoring with 1:08 left to play in the half.

Brant Bishop (Parkville, MO) and Daniel Leon (Mill Valley, CA) would complete the scoring for Stanford with strikes in the 52nd and 76th minutes, respectively.
