Volleyball Drops Two At UNLV;s Las Vegas Tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 2007 ASU volleyball season continued Saturday in Las Vegas which saw the Sun Devils take on a doubleheader against Virginia and Texas Tech at UNLV's Cox Pavilion. The Sun Devils were unable to take a win on the day though as they fell 3-2 to Virginia and 3-0 to Texas Tech. ASU is now 0-3 on the season as they return home to host the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge next weekend in Tempe.


In the first match Marina Mercer claimed 59 assists against the Cavaliers as Margie Giordano led the offense with 22 kills, as well as Paige Mittelstaedt and Sarah Reaves were just behind Giordano with 14 kills apiece. Sydney Donahue added 45 digs to her tally as the Sun Devils fell behind 0-2 after the first two games before rallying back to take the third in a tough 31-29 win. The Sun Devils grabbed Game Four 30-24 before the Cavaliers stepped up to take the deciding fifth game 17-15.


The second match pitted ASU versus the Texas Tech Red Raiders, where TTU came out strong taking the first game 30-24 with Emily Ziegler leading the offense with her 16 assists and two kills. In Game Two the Sun Devils were unable to keep up falling 30-22 before battling back in Game Three with three different lead changes against the Red Raiders. It wasn't enough though as ASU fell 30-24 in the third to fall to TTU.


The Sun Devils will now return home to host their first home tournament of the 2007 season as the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge kicks off next Friday at 10 a.m. The Sun Devils take the court for their first match on Friday at noon against Long Island and again at 7 p.m. against New Mexico. All matches will be played at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena.
