USC's Cross Country Season Begins Saturday At Fullerton
Aug. 30, 2007
LOS ANGELES - The USC women's cross country team will begin the 2007 season on Saturday (Sept. 1) at 8:45 a.m. in the Fullerton Season Opener meet being held at Carbon Canyon in Fullerton, Calif. The young Trojan squad this season will feature 16 runners, 14 of which are either freshmen, sophomores or first-year runners in the program.
'Anything in the top two places would be a good meet for our team, but of course our goal is to win it,' said USC cross country head coach Tom Walsh. 'There are four teams I would say have a chance to win the meet, led by defending champion Concordia, but I would also say that USC, Cal State Los Angeles and host CS Fullerton should be in the mix.'
The young Trojan squad's anticipated top three runners, freshman Zsofia Erdelyi, senior tranfer Laura Meyers and freshman Sarah Cocco, will not be competing this weekend, but have been training and should be available for the team's next meet on Sept. 15 at San Diego State.
Expected to compete for USC at the Fullerton Season Opener are returning sophomores Katherine Ellis, Chanel Fischetti, Bridget Helgerson, Natalie Jarvey, Alexis Nichols and Jennifer Wells, second-year runners juniors Christine Greer and Allison Spies, first-year runners juniors Taylor Carroll and Lindsay Buckley and freshmen Brianna Bentley, Kristin Byrne and Zara Lukens.
Greer finished among USC's top three finishers in all five meets she competed in in 2006, including being Troy's top finisher at Pepperdine and Helgerson was among USC's top five finishers in all six meets, including leading USC at the 2006 Fullerton Season Opener.
