Husky Men Battle To Scoreless Draw In Opener With New Hampshire
Aug. 31, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 18/14 Washington men's soccer team battled to a double overtime scoreless draw with New Hampshire in both teams' season opener during first round action of the Nike Portland Invitational at Merlo Field, Friday.
The Huskies (0-0-1) outshot the Wildcats 13-10 and owned a 10-6 advantage on corner kicks but weren't able to find the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins earned the shutout grabbing six saves. UW's preseason All-American forward Kevin Forrest led the squad with five shots.
'It was tough for us,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'The opponent was big, physical and played a lot of players behind the ball. We found it difficult to get going in the attacking third of the field. On the positive side we were dominating statistics early although the game became a bit of a fatigue battle in the end. It looked like an early season game for us. We'll grow from this and move on and hopefully get the goals we need to win on Sunday.'
The Huskies will look for their first win of the season when they take on Cal State Bakersfield in the final round of the Nike Portland Invitational, Sunday, Sept. 2, at noon.
