LOS ANGELES - Senior All-American Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) tied a personal best with 27 kills while sophomore setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) registered a career-high 68 assists Friday as the No. 4 USC Women of Troy defeated the No. 14 Duke Blue Devils, 3-2 (26-30, 30-26, 30-20, 24-30, 19-17), in USC Classic action at the Galen Center.
Kaczor had 11 digs as well with four assists for USC (5-0) as teammate Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) added 21 kills and 11 digs.

The Women of Troy scored four in a row in game one to take a 9-6 lead before the Blue Devils responded with their own four-spot for the 13-12 advantage and force a USC timeout. Gysin came out of the break and tied the game, but Juliana Traut added back-to-back kills to keep the Blue Devils ahead, 17-15. Moss used a kill and block to keep Duke ahead 21-17, but her Los Alamitos High teammate Geena Urango brought the Women of Troy back on her serve. With a service ace by Urango, the game was tied at 24 apiece. DeMange recorded a key kill and an attack error by USC put the home team behind by two, 27-25. She closed out the game victory with a slide kill on the right side for a 1-0 Duke match lead.
Three kills by USC senior middle blocker Katelyn Bishop paced the Women of Troy to a quick 11-5 lead in the second game. Kaczor utilized three kills to keep USC ahead 17-9, but the Blue Devils cut the deficit to four with four straight points. After taking a timeout, USC built the cushion again with three straight points. Jourdan Norman's slam on an overpass got Duke to within four at 23-19, but a Gysin kill and Bishop solo block kept the Trojans on top. Both teams traded points and Duke closed the gap again to three before Gysin and Kaczor finished the game with kills to even the match.
In game three, USC broke a 6-6 tie with four straight. Another ace from Urango made Duke call its first timeout of the game with the Trojans leading, 16-10. The Blue Devils got as close as five, but Gysin started another four-peat to push the advantage, 26-17. Copenhagen rounded the game with two kills and give the Women of Troy the lead in the match.
USC forged ahead to a 10-6 margin in the fourth game, but it was all Duke in the middle of the game with a 9-3 run to take the lead. DeMange registered back-to-back kills and Hausfeld later added a sneak as the Trojans called their final timeout of the game, down 23-19. DeMange provided the firepower again with two kills and a solo block as the Blue Devils iced the game to force a fifth and deciding game.
A Urango service ace and Kaczor kill gave USC a 3-0 lead in game five. After Copenhagen's solo block, DeMange recorded a kill and aided Hausfeld on a block for a 5-4 Trojan advantage. Kaczor's kill and a Duke attack error put the Trojans ahead by a 11-8 score before a Blue Devil timeout. The quick break helped Duke as they stormed out to a 12-11 lead. Kaczor and Copenhagen recorded back-to-back kills as USC retook the lead, 13-12. DeMange tied the game and both teams traded nine straight points at a back-and-forth pace. With the score tied at 17-17, an attacking error and ball-handling error against Duke gave USC the victory.
The USC Classic concludes tomorrow with Duke facing Cal State Northridge at 11 a.m. and USC playing Mercer at 1 p.m. The USC-Mercer match will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access, with Gametracker live stats available for both matches.
Notes...USC freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett did not play in Friday's match due to flu symptoms...this was just the third time that these two schools have met and the first time they have played in Los Angeles...three Duke players hail from California: Moss, Jenny Shull (Downey/Warren HS) and Sue Carls (Sherman Oaks/Marymount HS).
