WSU Soccer Scores Twice in Second Half to Defeat Montana

Aug. 31, 2007

MISSOULA, Mont. - Mallory Fox and Brooke Bemis scored second-half goals to lift Washington State past Montana in a nonconference women's soccer match, Friday.

'I'm delighted with our attitude and spirit given the emotions that come with a season opener and playing on the road,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'It was another very good step in the right direction for our program.'

The Cougars (1-0-0) dominated the game outshooting Montana (0-1-0) 19-4, including 9-1 in the first half. However, Washington State found itself down 1-0 less than two minutes into the second half when Montana's Kaitlyn Heinsohn scored an unassisted goal on the Grizzlies' first shot of the second half.

Washington State continued to apply pressure on Montana and Fox, a redshirt freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., tallied the equalizer at the 55:12 mark on an assist from sophomore and Fountain Hills, Ariz., native Kiersten Dallstream. Fox beat Montana goalkeeper Grace Harris in the bottom left corner for her first-career goal.

Just 3:17 later, senior Brooke Bemis took a pass from sophomore Carly Dobratz and beat Harris inside the right post to give the Cougars' a 2-1 lead. It was the fourth-career goal is the second-straight year the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho native tallied the game-winner in WSU's season-opener.

Washington State captured its season-opener for the fourth straight season and equaled its road-victory total from 2006. In coming from behind to win, the Cougars accomplished a feat one game into this season that eluded them all of last year.

'I was pleased we were able to keep possession at time and create scoring opportunities,' Potter said. 'The way we rebounded after going down 1-0 and the manner in which we were able to score quality goals after being behind a goal was impressive.'

The Cougars travel to Gonzaga Friday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. and open the home portion of their schedule Sunday, Sept. 9 against Utah in a noon kickoff.
