Forrest's Hat Trick Leads UW To 5-1 Win Over CS Bakersfield
Sept. 2, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior forward Kevin Forrest scored his first goal of the season just under two minutes into the match and later added two more to lead Washington men's soccer to a commanding 5-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in the final round of the Nike Portland Invitational, Sunday.
Forrest's fellow frontline player Ely Allen scored the other two goals as the Huskies (1-0-1) came away with the tournament title. Forrest, who also tallied an assist on one of Allen's goals and notched 10 shots in the game, was named the Nike Invitational Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
After playing through a double overtime scoreless draw versus New Hampshire in the tournament's first round on Friday, the Huskies didn't waste any time getting on the board Sunday.
Forrest, a preseason All-American and Hermann Trophy candidate, scored on a header at 1:49 which was assisted by freshman Matt Van Houten. The Huskies built as much as a 3-0 lead early on back-to-back goals from Allen and Forrest in the 16th and 18th minutes.
Cal State Bakersfield (1-1-0) came back with a goal of its own in the 30th minute on a 12-yard shot from Towa Manda. The scored remained 3-1 through most of the second half until the Huskies padded their lead with goals from Forrest in the 84th minute and Allen in the 88th minute.
'The stats say it all, Kevin and Ely were magnificent,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Overall it was a great performance. I think we showed a of lot bounce-back ability because our team wasn't satisfied with a draw on Friday.'
Forrest's third career hat trick moved him into Washington's all-time career scoring Top-10 list. The Edmonds, Wash., native now has 31 goals which ranks eighth in UW history.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins tallied four saves on the game, while Roadrunner goalie Steve Trojanowski grabbed seven saves and earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors.
The Huskies will remain on the road next week, traveling to Spokane to take on Gonzaga, Friday, Sept. 7.
