Cal Men's Golf Opens 2007 Fall Campaign at Air Force
Sept. 6, 2007
BACK ON COURSE: The California men's golf team opens its 2007 fall campaign this weekend in Colorado Springs as the Golden Bears will compete at the Falcon Invitational hosted by the Air Force Academy.
THE EVENT: The 39th annual Falcon Invitational is being hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy at Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course in USAFA, Colo., from September 8-9 (Saturday-Sunday). Eighteen teams will play two rounds on Saturday morning beginning at 8:15 a.m., while the final round will begin Sunday at 8:15 a.m. Daily results wil be posted online at www.GoAirForceFalcons.com.
DEZ SAYS: Leading into the Golden Bears first tournament of the year, head coach Steve Desimone once again shows his positive attitude and his excitement over getting another Cal campaign underway. 'I'm very much looking forward to getting out on the course and seeing how we play. This course is in magnificent shape - the best shape I have seen it in years. We go into this weekend a little short-handed as Brandon Beck is ill and couldn't make the trip, but we have more depth than we've had for a few years. We don't have much separating these guys from 1-6. I think we can make the final group on Sunday. With two freshmen, we're looking to gain some experience and to give them the opportunity to play against some good competition. One thing you can be sure is that the freshmen won't forget their first shot and first hole in college golf. George is a competitor and should do well this weekend and Freddy played very well this summer so we'll be interested to see how he plays on this course. We're just ready to get going.'
BEAR LINE-UP: Cal's lineup (in order, with 2006-07 final statistics) for the Falcon Invitational is listed below.
|Player||Cl.||06-07 Rounds||Strokes||Avg.||Low||Top Finish|
LINEUP LOOK: The Golden Bear lineup for the Falcon Invitational features three key returnees and a pair of highly-touted recruits. Junior George Gandranata was a regular in the lineup last season, posting a 73.1 stroke average, and will be in the top position for the Bears this weekend. Senior Freddy Wolfe will play at No. 2 after a solid preseason, while sophomore Andrey Mindirgasov returns for his sophomore season. Senior Brandon Beck is expected to be one of the Bears' top golfers, but did not make this weekend's trip due to illness. Freshmen Feldman Tan, a member of Singapore's National Team and Stephen Hale, one of the top recruits on the West Coast, round out the Cal lineup.
A LOOK AT THE FIELD: The Falcon Invitational field features 18 teams, including Colorado State and New Mexico, who joined the Bears at the NCAA West Regional last spring. Other schools involved are: Air Force, Air Force JV, Iowa State, Northern Colorado, Nothern Iowa, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UCCS, Utah, Utha State, UTEP, Weber State, Wichita State, Wyoming and Xavier.
LAST YEAR: Xavier captured the team title at last year's Falcon Invitational, shooting a 19-under-par 845, setting a new tournamen record. Cal finished third of 17 teams, firing a minus-nine. Michael Jensen was the Bears' top finisher, tying for eighth with a 212 (-4). Mindirgasov is the only one of this year's competitors who also played last year in the event - he shot a minus-two 214 in 2006.
