Box Score

BERKELEY - An early first-half goal was enough for the No. 7 California men's soccer team to defeat Penn, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium in the adidas Cal Legacy Classic. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Quakers fell to 0-2.

The lone goal of the game was scored in the 11th minute. After Penn committed a foul in its own territory, senior Andrew Jacobson booted the free kick across the field to junior Tyler Barry who found the back of the net. The score was one of the few offensive outbursts in a defensive first half. The opening half ended with a combined seven shots and three shots on goal.

The second half was a different story. Cal more than doubled its shot total from the first half, ending the game with 13, while Penn finished with nine shots of its own. The goalkeepers were tested more in the second half, as well. Sophomore Stefan Frei secured six saves en route to notching another shutout. Frei made five saves in the second half.

Jacobson produced four shots and two shots on goal to go with his assist. Senior Javier Ayala-Hil and freshmen Davis Paul and Servando Carrasco also got in on the action. All three recorded two shots each and Ayala-Hil earned a shot on goal.

For the Quakers, junior Alex Grendi took five shots and had three shots on goal. After surrendering the lone goal, junior keeper Drew Healy recovered and ended the contest with four saves.

Following Wisconsin's victory over Stanford, 1-0, earlier in the day, the Bears and the Badgers will meet Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium to determine the winner of the adidas Cal Legacy Classic.
