Captain Q & A with Cross Country's Alex Grant

Sept. 12, 2007

Alex Grant is a senior on the men's cross country team and will be heading up a team of 15 other runners.

How did you get involved in cross country?
I was a freshman in high school and I was too small to play football. My mom wouldn't sign the permission slip so I figured I could run. It worked out pretty well.

What brought you to WSU?
Coach Drake. I didn't know what I wanted to study but I knew I wanted to run so that was my priority. I thought he was the best coach and I just really clicked with him. I thought it would be the best choice for me running-wise and it's turned out well.

What has been your most memorable moment in Cougar cross country?
Without a doubt, qualifying for nationals last year has been the most amazing thus far. I've run in a lot of big college races but it was still a little overwhelming. There is something different when you go on the line with the 30 best teams. It's a different atmosphere than any other race.

What type of car do you drive?
A Volkswagen

What is one fun fact that few people know about you?
Hmm, fun fact, I'm from Nebraska? Most people don't know about that.

How do you get past the walls you hit when you're running?
There really aren't any tricks or easy ways to get past it. I think a lot of people assume it is fun for runners and easy for them to go out and run 20 miles on Sunday. It's not. You're as miserable as a normal student going out to the rec and running. I would say you just get calloused to it. Day in and day out, you just kind of hurt and so you eventually get used to it.

What are your post-graduate plans?
Hopefully I'll be attending law school if they let me in.

What is your favorite course to run on?
I enjoy the course at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota. It's a big early-season meet and I've run well there. There are lots of rolling hills and trees; I love running there.

What type of weather do you like running in the most?
In the fall is the best. It's a lot better when it is blue, crisp and clear. You get pretty warm when you're running so it is nice when it is cold to start off with. It becomes perfect once you get going.

What are the goals for the team this year?
Last year we went to nationals and it was enough to just qualify. This year we definitely want to be a top 20 team in the country.
