No. 4 USC Rallies For 3-2 Win At No. 20 Ohio State

Sept. 14, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior outside hitter Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) used 18 kills and a season-high 15 digs Friday to lead the No. 4 USC Women of Troy to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory (27-30, 30-20, 28-30, 30-26, 16-14) over the No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes in action at the 2007 Sports Imports Classic. USC remains perfect on the season at 9-0 and won for the second time against a Top 25 opponent by a 3-2 margin (Aug. 31 against then-No. 14 Duke at the Galen Center).

Senior outside hitter Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) had a game-high 23 kills for the Trojans while sophomore setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) recorded 63 assists and four kills in the win. USC lost the first game and fell behind, two games to one in the match before rebounding.

Danielle Meyer led the Buckeyes (6-2) with 19 kills and 12 digs, hitting .319 in the match (19-4-47). Katie Dull chipped in 14 kills and 11 digs while Briana McCarthy had 12 kills and 11 digs. Ashley Hughes recorded 52 assists with five kills and 14 digs.

Freshman libero Geena Urango (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) had a season-high 31 digs for the Trojans while freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) hit .538 (7-0-13) on the evening.

It was a tale of the good and bad for USC on the serving end of things as the team recorded a season-high eight service aces and 15 service errors. USC hit .246 in the match (game-high .311 in game two) while Ohio State hit .193 (game-high .381 in game three). The Buckeyes outblocked the Trojans by a 15.5-8.0 margin.

Ohio State took at 6-4 lead in game one before USC rattled off five straight points on Urango's serve. With USC leading 11-10, the Buckeyes returned the favor with seven straight for the 17-11 advantage. Two attack errors by the Trojans were part of the Buckeye run as a block by McCarthy and Kristin Dozier forced a USC timeout. Dull added two more kills as OSU held a 19-13 lead, but the Women of Troy chipped away on a '310' kill by Carico and a back row kill from Copenhagen as the Buckeyes took a timeout with a 21-18 lead. The lead remained at three for the host Buckeyes when a USC attack error made it a 26-22 score as the Trojans burned its final timeout of the game. USC had four straight points with OSU holding game point, but Ami Stevens put it away for the Buckeyes with a shot off the back right

Five service errors hurt the Trojans early in game two, but Copenhagen recorded back-to-back kills as USC stayed ahead, 12-10. A mini run by the Buckeyes cut the deficit to two at 16-14, but two kills from freshman Kimmee Roleder and three terminators by Kaczor had USC leading, 23-17. Copenhagen added two more kills as USC tied the match at one apiece.

It was the same start for USC in game three as errors gave the lead to Ohio State, 14-9. Carico used back-to-back kills to pace a minor comeback as USC got within three at 20-17, but kills from Dull and Kaila Calhoun gave OSU a 25-21 lead. The Buckeyes pushed the tempo to a 27-21 score before USC head coach Mick Haley double subbed in sophomore setter Chelsea Wilson and senior middle blocker Katelyn Bishop to spark the Women of Troy. A 7-1 run tied the game at 28-28, but Meyer's kill on an overpass and USC's next attempt sailed out of bounds as Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Trojans jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the fourth game, but mistakes on the hitting by USC allowed the Buckeyes to tie the game at 13-13. On the next point, Copenhagen and Bethany Johansen stuffed an OSU attempt to spark eight straight points for the Women of Troy. Ohio State did not let the momentum swing get to them as they returned the favor, utilizing a 7-1 run to get back into the game as USC held on to the slim 22-20 lead. Dozier pulled the Buckeyes within one at 26-25, but it was Copenhagen with two kills and one by Kaczor as USC forced a fifth and deciding game.

In game five, Garrett tied the game at 6-6 for USC with a kill and Roleder followed with back-to-back kills for an 8-6 USC lead at the switch. Down 10-9, Meyer again sparked the Buckeyes as three straight points including a Meyer/Hughes block made it a 12-10 lead for the home team. After USC's timeout, Kaczor hammered a ball down the middle followed by a Johansen quick kill for the 12-12 tie. Meyer smoked a ball on the next play off USC's Alli Hillgren, but Hillgren's dig sailed over the net and confusion between Meyer and her teammate let the ball drop as the Trojans retook the lead, 13-12. Meyer came through again down the right side with the tying point. Copenhagen gave match point to USC at 14-13, but her attacking error on the next play forced overtime. She made up for it with a kill and Ohio State's attempt on the next play just missed off the backline as USC secured the win to maintain its perfect record so far this season.

USC is back in action tomorrow against Purdue at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. It will be the final match before the Women of Troy begin Pac-10 Conference play next weekend with home matches against Arizona State and Arizona.
