2007 UCLA Baseball Minor League Update

Sept. 17, 2007

LOS ANGELES - During the 2007 season, 15 former Bruins competed in the minor leagues, including three players from UCLA's 2007 squad and six players from the 2006 team. Hector Ambriz, Josh Arhart, Dave Johnson, Paul Oseguera, Brant Rustich and Matt Thayer each helped lead their teams to postseason contention.

Former Bruin Ben Francisco made his major league debut with the Cleveland Indians in early May. While his duration with the big-league club lasted no more than two days, Francisco was called back to Cleveland at the end of June and made a tremendous splash. Eight days into his second stint with the major league team, the slugging outfielder hit a walk-off home run in his first major league start to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Indians to victory before a jubilant Jacobs Field crowd. Nursing a 4.5 game lead in the American League Central Division, the Indians look to play deep into October this fall.

Three pitchers from UCLA's 2006 squad had solid season for their respective minor league ballclubs. Right-hander Hector Ambriz logged a 10-8 record in 150.0 innings and earned the victory in each of his two playoff starts - one win coming against the San Jose Giants and former teammate Paul Oseguera. Right-hander Josh Roenicke, who emerged as the closer for the Billings Mustangs (Rookie) in 2006, succeed as the closer for the Sarasota Reds (A) before his mid-summer promotion to the Chattanooga Lookouts (AA). Roenicke totaled 24 saves in 46 relief appearances between both clubs. Oseguera finished 10-6 in 157.2 innings for San Jose, as the Giants look to win the California League title Tuesday evening.

Two pitchers from the Bruins' 2007 team made a splash in their respective short-season leagues. Right-hander Tyson Brummett registered a 3.40 ERA and 5-5 record in 76.2 innings after having led the Bruins with 138.0 innings in the spring. Right-hander Brant Rustich earned a mid-season promotion to the Brooklyn Cyclones.
