Bruin Cross Country Heads to Malibu for Pepperdine Invitational on Saturday

The men's and women's cross country teams will head to Malibu this Saturday for the Pepperdine Invitational in the final pre-season race of the season. The men will compete first at 7:30 am in an 8k race, while the women will follow at 8:30 am with a 6k race.

The men entered the pre-season with a No. 22 ranking in the country according to the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). They also rank fourth in the region. It is the first time the Bruin men have been ranked to start the season in several years.

This weekend, 10 of UCLA's freshmen class will compete along with redshirt-freshman Scott Crawford. Heading to Malibu are - Danny Benson, Crawford, Marc Hausmaninger, Fawad Khan, Dylan and Spencer Knight, Kent Morikawa, Blake Ramos, Jun Reichl, Kevin Sullivan and Evan Watchempino.

In the first pre-season race of the year, the Nevada Twilight Classic, the Bruins captured the team title as 10 runners finished in the top-10, and 11 finished in the top-20. Watchempino was the top freshmen runner at that meet and will look to lead again this weekend.

On the women's side, a group of seven athletes will compete including top newcomer Shannon Murakami and redshirt freshman Cobbie Jones. Murakami placed 12th at the Nevada Twilight Classic, while Jones was 16th and will both look to lead the Bruin women this weekend.

Also competing at Pepperdine are Gabrielle Bournes, Jones, Rosa Magana, Murakami, Nicole Pennes, Hannah Roeder and Christie St. Geme.
