Washington Opens Unique Auction of Game-Worn Uniforms
Sept. 19, 2007
SEATTLE - When the Washington Husky football team hosts nationally-ranked USC on Sept. 29 in Husky Stadium, the team will honor the 1960 national championship team by wearing 'throwback' uniforms from that season.
Tickets to the Sept. 29 game against USC are on sale by calling the Husky Ticket Office at 206/543-2220 or by clicking here.
The athletic department has opened a special online auction that will provide Husky fans the opportunity to purchase the actual game-worn jersey and pants from that game. All items will open for bid on today with staggered ending dates of September 26, 27 and 28. Bidding on the uniform packages will start at $125.
Fans can visit Washington's official athletic website at www.GoHuskies.com to browse the selection of uniforms and bid on their favorite player's uniform. The auction is being managed by CSTV Online, in conjunction with the UW athletic department. All proceeds benefit the Husky athletics program.
Until the beginning of the 1972 season, the Washington football team wore navy blue jerseys - at that time called 'Northwest Purple' - with gold numbers. The first game at which the Huskies wore purple jerseys was the 1972 season-opener against the University of the Pacific Tigers, which, interestingly, was also the first game at which UW wore purple helmets. Prior to that season, Washington wore gold helmets and the player who earned the 110 Percent Club award each week was honored with a purple helmet. In 1972, the honoree wore a purple helmet that was decorated with a large gold 'W' on the front.
