Arizona Volleyball Sweeps Washington State in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Washington State volleyball team fell to Arizona Friday night as the Wildcats snapped a seven-match losing streak with the 30-17, 30-23, 30-15 win over the Cougars at the McKale Center.

'We did not play well tonight. It was a very difficult night for our team both offensively and defensively,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'I don't think I can single out any one aspect, it was just a very difficult night for our team. We're back to the drawing board on Monday and we'll work hard all week and get ready for next week's matches.'

Washington State (9-17 overall, 0-12 Pac-10) was led by Tara West's six kills, one ace and one block. Brittany Johnson led the team with two blocks and Maureen Perez had 20 assists. Kelly Hyder had 13 digs and moved into seventh place on the Cougars' all-time career digs list with 992 digs in her two seasons at WSU.

Randy Goodenough led Arizona (13-12 overall, 3-10 Pac-10) with a match-high 16 kills, hitting .452, and added 12 digs, two blocks and three aces. Tiffany Owens contributed 11 kills (.348) while Jacy Norton had six blocks. Paige Weber had 39 assists and Katie Jackels and Brittany Leonard combined for another 22 digs.

Arizona got a quick lead in the first game and extended it to a 24-10 advantage over the Cougs. The Wildcats prevailed in the opener, 30-17. Arizona hit .293 and landed three aces in the first game, and held WSU to a -.024 hitting percentage.

The Cougars started the second game with an urgency to play above the first game effort and took an early 5-2 lead and maintained the lead and the Wildcats fought back and tied the game at 15. Arizona then out-scored the WSU 15 to 8 to take the 30-23 game win.

The Wildcats kept the momentum, hitting a blistering .581 percentage as a team, and ran off a 30-15 third game win.

Washington State hosts No. 8 California (19-5, 9-4) Thursday, Nov. 8, and No. 5 Stanford (22-2, 11-2), Friday, Nov. 9, in Bohler Gym.
