PULLMAN, Wash. - In her first game as head coach for Washington State University, June Daugherty led the Cougar women's basketball team to a 10-point victory over Southern Oregon (72-62) at Bohler Gym Friday, in the squad's season-opening exhibition game.

'Our kids were really excited to play and get after somebody else rather than each other in practice,' Daugherty said. 'This is a team that doesn't need a lot of motivation. They're excited to play and they play hard for each other.'

The Cougars were led by juniors Katie Appleton and Heather Molzen, who each scored in double figures. Appleton (5-foot-8, guard) scored a game-high 20 points, while Molzen (6-3, forward/center) recorded the game's only double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

WSU held a six-point advantage at the end of the first half thanks in large part to second-chance opportunities. The Cougars recorded 12 offensive rebounds in the first half and finished the game with 19 boards on the offensive end, leading to 20 second chance points. WSU posted 47 boards to Southern Oregon's 37 on the night.

'We won on the boards, which is really critical for us,' Daugherty said. 'We had 19 offensive boards, which is a good sign for this team...I thought our kids battled really well.'

Five consecutive points from Appleton to start the second half gave the Cougars an 11-point lead, but Southern Oregon was able to climb back, taking a one-point lead with 11:43 left in the game (47-48) and again with 9:12 remaining (49-50).

With 8:36 left in the game, freshmen Kezia Kelly (5-6, guard) hit Molzen under the basket for a layup to give WSU the lead. Kelly then scored on a fast break 18 seconds later, sealing the victory for the Cougars.

Sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge (5-9) led WSU with four assists, while Molzen added a game-high two blocks and Appleton added a game-high five steals.

WSU will take on Alaska-Anchorage Monday (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m. at Friel Court in the final tune-up before the regular season.
