Junior Marisa Samaniego opened up the year with a win on three-meter at the Trojan Diving Invitational at USC on Friday to highlight the UCLA dive team. The All-American tallied a score of 288.70 to win and also placed second in the one-meter competition (270.95).

Samaniego led several divers in the finals as the Bruins had six athletes total advance out of the preliminary rounds.

'Marisa's in a position that if we can really get through a couple of things at a higher level day to day, she can be one of the elite in the country,' noted dive coach Tom Stebbins. 'As for the rest of the team, I'm really pleased with today's effort, but we are pretty far away from where we need to go. As a whole, we are much better then I feel like we were a week ago. The goal of the fall is to get better each week and I feel we are doing that.'

On one-meter, junior Brittany Hill was fifth (237.90) and freshman Morgan Erpenbeck was 10th (216.50). Erpenbeck and Hill were 10th and 11th, respectively, in the prelim round. Freshman Laura Winn was 15th in the prelim round with a score of 210.70.

Junior Shannon Pirozzi placed sixth on three-meter with a score of 255.15, while junior Tess Schofield (8th, 250.55), Hill (9th, 246.05) and Winn (10th, 226.30) also competed in the final.

Pirozzi was 10th after prelims, while Hill was 12th as both moved up during the finals.

Erpenbeck was 13th on three-meter, just missing a spot in the final with a score of 214.50.

Competition continues on Saturday with the platfrom competition at 11:00 am.
