UCLA Takes Care of Arizona State, 3-1

Nov. 2, 2007

LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team extended the nation's longest home unbeaten streak to 36 matches on Friday evening, posting a 3-1 victory over Arizona State in a Pac-10 showdown at Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who haven't lost at home since Sept. 9, 2005, improve to 13-1-2 overall and 6-0 in Pac-10 play. The Sun Devils fall to 9-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference action.

Sophomore Lauren Cheney knocked in her team-leading 18th goal of the season in the 15th minute, hooking up with senior Danesha Adams before blasting a right-footed shot to the far left corner, giving UCLA a 1-0 advantage. McCall Zerboni, who gave the ball to Adams, was also credited with an assist on that goal.

Arizona State nearly tied things up with just seconds to play in the first half, however freshman Dana Wall made a fantastic clearance off the line, saving a sure goal to preserve the Bruins' lead going into the locker room.

UCLA, which won its 10th straight match on Friday, took a 2-0 lead just 44 seconds into the second half, as Adams lofted in a ball to the far left corner, just over the hands of ASU goalkeeper Briana Silvestri.

Freshman defender Lauren Barnes capped the scoring for UCLA in the 53rd minute, as she scored her first career goal on a bending free kick from the right side into the left corner.

Arizona State avoided the shutout with a goal by Kyleyn Felts in the 74th minute. Dante Perea chipped a ball from the left endline that sailed over the head of UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson. Felts ran onto it, chesting the ball into the empty net. It marked the first goal given up by UCLA in Pac-10 play, ending a string of five straight shutouts.

Bruin forward Kara Lang had two goals called back on offside calls, and nearly scored another in the first half had it not been for a brilliant save by Silvestri, who finished with a match-high five saves.

UCLA plays its final home match of the regular season on Sunday, hosting Arizona at 1:00 p.m. Seniors Adams, Henderson and Alma Playle will be honored in a special ceremony prior to kickoff. A Bruin win on Sunday will mark the second straight season that the Bruins have went undefeated in regular season home matches. UCLA was 12-0 last year and is currently 9-0 this season.
