UW Women Fall to No. 2 Stanford in Soccer
Nov. 2, 2007
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Kelley O'Hara scored twice inside the opening seven minutes Friday, igniting second-ranked Stanford's 4-0 win over Washington in a Pac-10 women's soccer game at Maloney Field.
The Cardinal (12-2-3) scored all four goals during the first 25 minutes and cruised to the sixth win in their last seven meetings with Washington. Stanford, which improved to 3-1-2 in Pac-10 play, has never lost at home to the Huskies with an 8-0-2 advantage in Palo Alto.
The Huskies (5-10-1) dropped to 2-3-1 in conference games.
O'Hara opened the scoring at 4:16, taking advantage of a shot by teammate Marisa Abegg that deflected off a UW defender. O'Hara collected the carom and sent the ball into the back of the net.
She struck again less than three minutes later off an assist from Abegg. O'Hara drove a shot into the upper right corner at 6:43 for her team-leading eighth goal.
The Cardinal's third score came at 13:44 on a 25-yard blast from Kristin Stannard for her second goal of the season.
Allison Falk capped the scoring on a header off a corner kick from Christen Press. Falk's third goal of the season came at 24:53.
All four Stanford goals were scored against Husky starter Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.). The sophomore made two saves in the first half when Stanford registered a 10-1 shot advantage.
Carr was replaced at halftime by sophomore Alex Phillips (Park City, Utah) who was not called upon to make a save in 45 minutes during her Husky debut. Carr had played all of every game until halftime Friday, a stretch of 1,325 consecutive minutes between the posts.
Cardinal goalkeeper Erica Holland was credited with two saves en route to her fourth, and the team's sixth, shutout.
In the scoreless second half, the run of play was more even and each team attempted four shots.
The Washington women are in the midst of a span of four consecutive games against ranked opponents. UW plays its final road game on Sunday at No. 14 California.
The Huskies close out the regular season by entertaining No. 9 USC on Nov. 9 and No. 1 UCLA on Nov. 11.
