Kelcy McKenna Advances to Finals of ASU Thunderbird Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - It was all Kelcy McKenna in day two of the 2007 Women's Tennis ASU Thunderbird Tournament as she stepped up to down the tournament's No. 1 seed, Cal's Stephanie Kusano in the quarterfinal round before topping another Golden Bear, Bojana Bobusic to advance to tomorrow's final round against Cal's Marina Cossou. Play continues tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m. with doubles followed with the main bracket finals.


In doubles action the Sun Devils shone again as Laila Abdala and Lauren Megale paired up for another win with an 8-3 victory over Utah's Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh. Teammates Wendy Pilecka and Kelcy McKenna also logged in a win as they topped Cal's Bojana Bobusic and Rachel Dillion 8-2.


In singles action, the Sun Devils had two competing in quarterfinal action and advanced them both as Laila Abdala made quick work of Utah's Jane Kryunchkova with a 6-1, 6-4 win. The second Devil, freshman, Kelcy McKenna found herself paired up against the tournament's No. 1 seed, Cal's senior, Stephanie Kusano with youth prevailing as McKenna topped the Bear in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.


In semifinals, Abdala wasn't as fortunate as she faced off with Cal's Marina Cossou, where the Bear overpowered Abdala, taking a 6-2, 6-3 win. It was McKenna's day though as she came out to battle through a tough first set to top Cal's Bojana Bobusic 7-6(3), 6-3 to advance to tomorrow's finals where she'll face Cal's Marina Cossou.


Play begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with doubles action followed up with the main bracket finals and third-place match starting at approximately 9:30. Consolation brackets will begin play around 11 a.m. with all matches being played in Tempe at ASU's WhitemanTennisCenter.
